Slovakia is a country that is not traditionally associated with mass tourism that many other European countries like France and Italy are accustomed to. This is what gives the country an authentic edge over some of its other European counterparts. The majority of the country’s cities, towns and villages are relatively untouched by the commercial impacts of international tourism and they have managed to retain their natural Slovak character and charm.

One of the main attractions of Slovakia is of course its stunning natural scenery. The Carpathian Mountains and the High Tatras are the perfect escape for people looking for a truly relaxing holiday away from the business of the tourist traps. Travelling around Slovakia by car is the best way to explore the country because public transport for tourists is generally catered towards the main tourist attractions, rather than the real Slovakia. Some of the most unspoilt villages in the mountainous areas include Vikolinec, Kremnica and Banska Stiavnica.

A car rental is an excellent way to travel to more remote places, such as quiet villages high up in the mountains. Before picking up the car the driver must present a valid passport; if not they may have to contact the data recovery London Identity and Passport Service for an emergency passport. Most of Slovakia’s road infrastructure is well looked after, however smaller country roads may be challenging for inexperienced drivers. Like other European countries, the penalties for drink-related driving can be severe, often incurring extortionate fines. Motorists driving on the motorways will need to purchase a sticker (known as a vignette) from a petrol station for a small charge, which is valid for 7 days. During the winter months, Slovakia regularly experiences heavy snowfalls and very low temperatures, requiring motorists to include snow chains to their tyres on some country roads. For people who have a reasonable understanding of spoken Slovak, the official language, radio stations offer excellent traffic coverage and information for drivers to help them avoid or prepare for any disruption on the roads during their holiday.
